This unglazed hidasuki-style teapot with a ash-salt patina was fired in my wood kiln. The patterns on the lid and body gives fluid effect to the piece. The teapot was reduction-fired, which enhances the clay, and in addition it was positioned in a particular spot in the kiln where the effects of flame and ash are especially rich and unique. Only a few pieces can be placed in such a spot in a single firing.
I take great care in making teapots, making sure that each of them pours well and that their lids fit as they should. Fired at high temperatures, they are vitrified and non-porous; however over time tea tannins will give them a patina, testifying to their regular use.
This teapot can be used to steep most types of loose-leaf tea because of its interior strainer. For sencha tea, however, it is recommended that an additional strainer be used.
Each piece reflects the unique character that wood firing alone can impart and is intended to become a cherished object for any tea lover. The photographs presented here correspond to the one-of-a-kind piece you will receive.
